Now in its second year, the College of Education hosted its annual Student Art Competition and Exhibition to promote the arts within the San Diego community.

The contest, sponsored by both the San Diego Private Bank and the Tony and Alicia Gwynn Foundation, is open to all San Diego County residents who are currently enrolled in grades K-12. The goal of the contest is to encourage students, teachers, and families to explore modern and contemporary art together.

The competition, led by COE Assistant Dean of Special Projects Dr. Tanis King Starck, took place May 7th on the SDSU campus in Montezuma Hall, and schools were individually invited to participate in the competition. Each painting embodied the theme of education in the form of a painting, sculpture, photograph, or anything else that students were able to produce.

Finalists for the competition were announced May 1st, moving on to the final round of judgment and exhibition. Each of the competition’s top three winners were awarded gift certificates for $100, $75, and $50, respectively. Students were tasked with not only designing the artwork, but also showcasing their motivations and inspirations for their particular pieces of art.

In addition to the prizes, top finishers in the competition were able to display their artwork within the College of Education offices on the SDSU campus. With four separate age range categories, the possibilities of creative expression are endless. Any student, parent, or teacher who wishes to know more can visit the College of Education's Art Competition website.
