Chung Elected to Executive Committee for Association of Education Deans

Y. Barry Chung

Y. Barry Chung
, Dean of the San Diego State University College of Education, has been elected to the executive committee of one of North America’s top associations of education deans.

The Council of Academic Deans from Research Education Institutions (CADREI) is an assembly of 150 education deans from universities classified as very high research activity (R1) and high research activity (R2). SDSU is the only California State University and one of only four public institutions in the state to be represented.

CADREI’s 10-member executive committee includes deans from institutions such as the University of Miami, Syracuse University and The Ohio State University.

“I was delighted to accept the nomination because I thought it would further enhance San Diego State’s national visibility and impact in the field of education across the country,” said Chung, who will serve on the committee for the next three years. “It's a very good group of people on the council — very notable deans of education across the country — and I think all of us bring some uniqueness to the table. I feel very lucky to be in this company.”

CADREI holds meetings twice a year — once in the fall and once in the spring. As a member of the executive committee, Chung will take a leadership role in identifying the critical issues in the field of education and organizing guest speakers and professional development opportunities to help deans meet these challenges.

Chung said he is particularly interested in exploring issues such as diversity and equity and COVID-19 response.

“I think the executive committee is going to be very helpful in identifying all the hot topics, trends and new challenges,” Chung said. “It's always interesting to learn from the diversity of positions and perspectives from around the country, but it’s also important for me to bring in a San Diego State perspective.”
