Owen Awarded for Leadership in Early Childhood Development

Kathryn Owen, a lecturer and alumna within the Department of Child and Family Development (CFD), has received an award from the World Forum Foundation Child Care Exchange.

Formed in 2014 by the Childcare Exchange, the Exchange Leadership Initiative (ELI) looks to explore strategies for making leadership more visible in the field of Early Care and Education, as well as grow in understanding of the qualities, training, and skill sets that underlie leadership and responsibility fulfillment. Following a global search for educational leaders, Owen was recognized as a Master Leader through the initiative.

“I am honored to receive recognition as an Exceptional Master Leader by Childcare Exchange,” Owen said, “along with 48 inspirational colleagues who share a deep understanding of early childhood research, principles and practices.”

Owen’s award comes after her colleague Dr. Sarah Garrity, an assistant professor in the CFD department, recommended her to the ELI selection committee. Owen attributes her growing understanding of early childhood development to mentoring and training she received as a member of the first EC-SEBRIS cohort, which focused on giving early childhood education professionals the necessary knowledge and skills to address the needs of children with emotional and behavioral difficulties.

“It is exciting to now be part of this new cohort of Master Leaders as our nation grows in understanding of the value of attunement and early attachment,” Owen said. “I hope that my journey as a CFD alumna inspires others in our field, as we continue to work towards fostering quality care and learning experiences for all young children and their families.”
