Doctoral students from the College of Education were able to display their work at SDSU’s annual Student Research Symposium (SRS), keeping in line with San Diego State’s status as a top research institution.

The SRS, which took place March 4-5, allowed students to showcase their preliminary and finished research and other creative activities in a public forum. The College of Education saw three of its students and four of its faculty members involved with award-winning research topics.

Patricia Fernandez, a graduate of the PK-12 Educational Doctorate program, won the Library Award with Dr. Cheryl James-Ward as her faculty mentor. The Dean's Award for the College of Education went to Ana Gabriela Kovats, a student in the SDSU/CGU Joint Doctoral Program. Dr. Felisha Herrera Villareal was her faculty mentor. The President's Award went to another student in the Joint Doctoral Program, Nicole Belisle, who had Dr. Andre Branch as her faculty mentor.

Dr. Audrey Hokoda was the faculty mentor of Nicole Meda, double major in Psychology and Spanish, who won the Undergraduate Research Excellence Award. Students who won the President’s Award were also awarded a cash prize of $500, and will represent SDSU in the CSU-wide SRS later this month.

These students and faculty mentors help underscore the role the COE plays in making SDSU one of the nation's major public research institutions. These students are engaging in research that addresses important issues that influence the quality of life for children, adults, and families.
