All it can take to change a child’s life is giving them the gift of education, which is exactly what SDSU’s Aztecs for Education gave to students at Logan Elementary school last spring.

Aztecs for Education (AFE), comprised of teaching candidates within the College’s School of Teacher Education, hosted an author event for students from kindergarten through eighth grade at Logan Elementary school in San Diego. Kathleen Krull, a local children’s author, was able to visit and meet students at the school while AFE was able to provide a book for every child at the school.

All 640 students received a copy of Krull’s book "Women Who Broke the Rules: Sonia Sotomayor – I’ll be the Judge of That" through AFE’s “One Book, Two Schools” initiative. In addition to the books, AFE was able to set up a visit from the Honorable Yvonne Campos who sits on the San Diego Superior Court.

“I’m so proud of Aztecs for Education,” Dr. Virginia Loh-Hagan, the group’s faculty advisor, said. “This event is proof of their passion for education which extends beyond the classroom and into the community.”

Students at the school were also able to partake in a mock trial, where students held roles as real life courtroom personnel. The event was a huge success and brought a wave of energy to the school.

“[COE students] will make great teachers as their dedication, commitment and caring showed in the short time I spent with them,” Campos said.

AFE’s event was made possible through the SDSU Student Success Fee, and the group hopes to continue its partnerships with schools throughout the San Diego School District.
