McClure Honored by Mayor for Students’ Volunteer Work

The College of Education is devoted to serving the greater San Diego community, and Special Education faculty member Mendy McClure has exemplified that by receiving the City of San Diego’s Mayoral Award at the Annual Volunteer Recognition Event.


Each year, volunteers throughout the San Diego area gather at the Spreckles Organ Pavilion in Balboa Park. The event, held on April 9, allowed those who donated their time to improve the City of San Diego to be recognized for their services as well as sign up for other volunteer opportunities as part of San Diego Volunteer Week. The event also featured performances from civic arts studios throughout San Diego.

McClure, who was given the event’s prestigious Mayoral Award, was recognized for her students’ work in her General Studies 420 class, Disability and Society. Students in the course volunteered with Therapeutic Recreation Services, which allows San Diegans with mental, physical, and emotional disabilities to participate in sports, leisure, and other outreach services.

McClure’s class specializes in helping others understand the numerous difficulties faced by people with disabilities in our society, and how we can further respect those who might be different than ourselves. Volunteerism as demonstrated by McClure and her students continues to show that the College of Education – and San Diego State University – are constantly striving to make a difference in our community.
