COE Round Table: Innovative Uses of Technology

On Wednesday, November 9th, the College of Education hosted the Innovative Uses of Technology Round Table Session.  During the session COE faculty and staff were invited to present about the new and creative ways that they are using technology in their daily work.

Kids' picture book by SDSU faculty member highlights Chinese New Year

When Virginia Loh-Hagan was in the second grade, she read a book that changed her life. Now she’s trying to do the same for other young readers.

An education faculty member at San Diego State University's School of Teacher Education, Loh-Hagan also writes children’s books, including the newly released “PoPo’s Lucky Chinese New Year,” illustrated by Renné Benoit. In it, a Chinese-American girl learns from her grandmother about the annual celebration, which falls this year on Jan. 28.

SDSU Gets $7 Million to Strengthen Principal Preparation

San Diego State University is one of seven universities that have been chosen to participate in a new $47 million initiative to improve preparation of principals.

The funds, distributed over the next four years, will help SDSU to develop new models for principal preparation programs and encourage higher-quality training across the state.

COE Student Lands Sally Casanova Scholarship

Another College of Education student has been named a Casanova Scholar.

Stephanie Nguyen, 24, will be a scholar in the prestigious Sally Casanova Pre-Doctoral Fellowship until June 2017.

COE Faculty Receive University Grants for 2017

The University Research Council and the University Grants and Lectureship Committee (UGLC) announced the awardees of the University Grants Program (UGP) for 2017 and several were COE faculty members!

The purposes of the UGP are to support scholarly research and creative activities, permit faculty to launch new projects, bring advanced projects to completion; and help faculty members develop a research program competitive for extramural funding.

COE Professor Presents at UNESCO, Lands New Fellowship

Her new fellowship will focus on how to prevent violent extremism.

The fellowship is the result of a presentation that Dr. Marilee Bresciani Ludvik recently gave on the same topic at a United Nations Organization for Education, Science and Culture (UNESCO) conference in New Delhi, India.

COE Faculty Speaks at White House

A College of Education faculty lent his voice and expertise at a White House conference on education for youth of color.

Dr. Luke Wood, associate professor at the College of Education’s Department of Administration, Rehabilitation and Postsecondary Education spoke at the Inclusive STEM Education for Youth of Color. STEM stands for science, technology, engineering and mathematics.

Proposition 58 Passed, Now What?

California voters overwhelmingly supported Proposition 58 on the November ballot, which ended the 18-year mandate of English-only instruction in public schools.

Proposition 58 will not go into effect until July 2017, but it doesn't actually establish new bilingual programs. That will be up to local communities to decide.

But are there enough bilingual teachers in California to fill demand if communities do add programs? And what is being done to ensure new bilingual programs reach the neediest students?

Cristina Alfaro, associate professor of English language and biliteracy development in the College of Education at San Diego State University, discusses the issue on KPBS Midday Edition with Maureen Cavanaugh.
