Program Beginnings:

In 2000, San Diego State University partnered with the Sweetwater Union High School District (SUHSD) to create the Compact for Success program with a goal to bring new educational opportunities to Sweetwater graduates. The partnership involves SUHSD teachers working side-by-side with SDSU faculty to design a school curriculum that helps students meet specific requirements for college admissions. Today, the nationally recognized, award-winning program has increased Sweetwater’s college-going population by 120 percent.

Recent Graduate Becomes First RISE Scholar to Receive Teaching Position

Stephanie Balvaneda, a 25-year-old is the first hire from a new program called Return, Inspire and become a Sweetwater Educator (RISE), a collaboration between SUHSD and San Diego State’s College of Education.

COE Graduate Paying It Forward

She always knew she would pay it forward. LaDreda P. Lewis’ desire was to help kids like herself, children who grew up less fortunate and who had experienced a personal tragedy or family hardship. She is doing exactly that.

As a teen, Lewis lost her mother to cancer and was left to live with her brothers. When she thought her life was about to be derailed, the women in her neighborhood embraced her and paved the way for her to go to San Diego State University where her life would change forever.

Vasquez Named Outstanding Latino Faculty by National Organization

The award honors a person who has provided “outstanding service” working with students and/or has delivered “excellent instruction in a teaching-oriented institution.”

Dr. Marissa Vasquez has done exactly done and her service and dedication to serving students pursuing a college degree has earned her the Outstanding Latino/a Faculty: Service/Teaching in Higher Education Award from the American Association of Hispanics in Higher Education. She will receive the award in March 2018 at the organization’s national conference.
