The San Diego State University College of Education continued its steady rise in the latest U.S. News & World Report ranking of top education schools, while one of its programs climbed into the Top 4 among its peers.

The college ranked No. 53 in the nation on the annual list, which was released on Tuesday. That’s up one spot from last year and a significant jump from just three years ago when COE ranked No. 69.

“I’m incredibly proud of our college’s recent ascent in the national rankings, which I believe is a reflection of the extraordinary effort put forth by our students, faculty and staff,” said Dr. Y. Barry Chung, dean of the College of Education. “While it’s great to see us move up overall, I’m particularly heartened to see us rise three spots to No. 40 among public universities. The College of Education’s standing among our peer institutions is an area of continued success.”

Another notable area of success is the Rehabilitation Counseling Program, which reached No. 4 out of 96 rehabilitation counseling programs ranked by U.S. News & World Report. The program, which is delivered both in person and 100 percent online, moved up six spots from No. 10 from the previous rankings in 2015. Significantly, SDSU is the only program ranked in the Top 4 that does not feature a Ph.D. program.

“We're very proud to have our highest ranking ever among rehabilitation counseling programs,” said Dr. Caren Sax, professor and chair of the Department of Administration, Rehabilitation and Postsecondary Education. “Our recent addition of a path for becoming a licensed professional clinical counselor, along with our other specializations in psychiatric rehabilitation, cognitive disabilities, assistive technology and transition services, attract talented applicants. These students become employed in state vocational rehabilitation agencies, California community colleges and universities and many local profit and non-profit organizations that serve individuals with disabilities.”

In addition to rising to No. 40 among public universities, COE’s ranking held at No. 7 in California, No. 5 among public universities in the state and No. 1 in San Diego County. COE’s online master’s degree program maintained its position as the top program in California, ranking No. 25 in the nation and No. 23 among public universities.
