Welcome from Dean Chung

Dean Y. Barry Chung
It is with a sense of excitement and optimism that I welcome you to the 2019-2020 academic year! With the fall semester set to begin, we’re ready for the return of nearly 2,000 students into our classrooms, training sites, and online spaces as we continue to prepare quality teachers, clinicians, and educational leaders for our region, our state, and beyond. We’re also delighted to welcome four new faculty members into the fold, while celebrating the promotion and reappointment of 15 others

Even as we look forward, the start of a new school year always serves as a milestone to reflect and take stock. It’s hard to believe that it has been a little more than a year since I arrived at San Diego State University as the Dean of the College of Education. In the time since, we’ve celebrated some wonderful accomplishments, including the rise in our U.S. News & World Report national ranking to No. 53, the approval of four new Integrated Teacher Education Program (ITEP) pathways, and the new DEBER and US PREP initiatives that promise to make strides for educational equity. I have been grateful for the chance to hear from you — our extraordinary community of students, faculty, staff, alumni, and friends — about what makes us unique and what we can do to further define ourselves as one of the nation’s top colleges of education. I have learned so much.

I am thrilled to report that we are in a strong position to implement many of these ideas now that our College of Education new leadership team is in place. Last spring, Dr. Karen Myers-Bowman took over as Senior Associate Dean, where she oversees budgeting, governance and policy, academic programs, and personnel. And on Aug. 22, Dr. Cristian Aquino-Sterling will begin his new role as Associate Dean for Diversity and International Affairs. This year, he will oversee the expansion of our college’s global presence and lead a collaborative process of diversity and inclusion planning in which many of you will be asked to participate.

It’s a time for transformation here in the College of Education, and you can keep track of all the changes, innovations, and accomplishments as the year progresses here in Informed & Inspired. I welcome you once again to the new academic year, and I wish you the best of luck in all your scholarly pursuits.
