Accomplishments, awards, events and more — here’s a glance at a few things you may have missed in the College of Education over the past month:
On (and off) campus
- The College of Education convened its inaugural meeting of the External Advisory Board to the Dean on Nov. 14. The board, made up of distinguished professionals in the San Diego community, was formed to advise Dean Y. Barry Chung on how to best advance the mission and vision of the college.
- Liberal studies students traveled to Camp Cuyamaca for their annual fall camping trip Oct. 25-27. Check out freshman Lizzie Perl’s Instagram story takeover.
- A professional development certificate training held by the Center for Family, School and Community Engagement on Oct. 24-25 drew more than 100 attendees from across the state. The training empowered family/community engagement liaisons and staff members to engage with families and build strong school-family partnerships that support student success and well-being.
- From Nov. 2-9, COE faculty, students and staff teamed up to collect clothing and other items for people affected by wildfires in Baja California.
Faculty and staff accomplishments
- Marilee Bresciani Ludvik, professor of postsecondary education in ARPE, has been named to the National Association of Student Personnel Administrators (NASPA) Certification Advisory Task Force. The task force is the central NASPA membership body that supports and advises the development of certification for student affairs educators.
- Michelle Xiong, liberal studies advisor from the OSS, was named an Outstanding Faculty/Staff Adviser by the SDSU Office of the Provost.
- The following COE and COE-affiliated SDSU Foundation employees were honored for their years of service at the URAD Staff Awards: 20 years: Rebecca Hotzel (ARPE/Interwork Institute), Michael McKean (CRMSE), Joseph Ornelas (ARPE/Interwork Institute) and Teresa Ramirez-Velasquez (STE). 10 years: Linda Bussell (Interwork Institute), Jacqueline Fuller (OSS), Virginia Laughlin (Interwork Institute) and David Noyes (Interwork Institute). Alumni notes
- Marsha Gable (’11) has been named interim president of Miramar College. Gable, who currently serves as the vice president of student services at Grossmont College, also teaches in SDSU’s master’s program in postsecondary educational leadership: specialization in student affairs.
- J.J. Lewis (’17), superintendent and CEO for Compass Charter Schools, was named a Rising Aztec by SDSU Alumni. The inaugural award recognizes up-and-coming alumni who make support for SDSU and engagement with the university part of their lives and careers. Read more about the award at SDSUAlumni.
- Hilda Martinez (’98, ’01, ’16), a teacher at Zamorano Fine Arts Academy, was named the San Diego Scottish Rite’s Teacher of the Year.
