Accomplishments, awards, events and more — here’s a glance at a few things you may have missed in the College of Education since our last issue.
Student accomplishments
- Five COE students were honored for their outstanding research at the Student Research Symposium, Feb. 28-29. Darielle Blevins received the President’s Award, Giannela Gonzales and Azar Robles received the Provost's Award, and Michael Foster and Brianna Wuensch received the Dean’s Award.

- Students from SDSU’s Bilingual Education Student Organization (BESO) presented and facilitated sessions at the National Association for Bilingual Education (NABE) conference in Las Vegas in late February.

Faculty and staff accomplishments
- Dr. J. Luke Wood, SDSU’s Associate Vice President for Diversity and Innovation, and Dr. Frank Haris III, professor in ARPE, were named 2020 Educators Unsung Hero Honorees by the The Association of African American Educators in partnership with the San Diego County Office of Education
- Dr. Francisco Escobedo, a lecturer in Educational Leadership (EDL) and superintendent of the Chula Vista Elementary School District, was highlighted in an Education Dive Q&A.

- Dr. Nick Johnson, assistant professor in teacher education (STE) was accepted into the Association of Mathematics Teacher Educators "Service, Teaching, and Research" (STaR) program for 2020. STaR is an induction program for early career mathematics educators working at institutions of higher education.
Alumni accomplishments
- Dr. Jose Luis Alvarado, who graduated from COE’s teacher credential and special education master’s programs and later served as associate dean, was named Provost and VP for Academic Affairs at CSU Los Angeles.

- Erica Alfaro (’19, Hybrid Online MA in Education with a Concentration in Counseling program), whose graduation photos with her migrant farmworker parents went viral last summer, was selected as a speaker at San Diego Women’s Week 2020. The event, which had been slated for mid-March, has been rescheduled for Aug. 24-28.
- Serena Pariser (’09, educational technology master's program) published her second book for teachers, "Real Talk About Time Management: 35 Best Practices for Educators" with Corwin Press.
