Aztec for Life Appears in Southwest Magazine

One of SDSU's Aztec for Life advertisements featuring Dr. Frank Harris III appeared in May's issue of Southwest: The Magazine. The article Tackling Educational Barriers for Black Men discusses Dr. Harris' work.

Dr. Harris is an associate professor in the Department of Administration, Rehabilitation, & Postsecondary Education (ARPE/Interwork Institute) in the College of Education at San Diego State University.

Linked Learning Goes to Washington

COE Associate Dean Nancy Farnan was part of a delegation that went to Washington D.C. to meet with legislators to discuss and explain the benefits of Linked Learning as Congress considers reauthorizing the Elementary and Secondary Education Act.

Robinson-Zañartu Honored with Faculty Monty for Contributions to University

The College of Education’s own Dr. Carol Robinson-Zañartu will receive the SDSU Alumni Association's Award for Outstanding Faculty Contributions to the University, nicknamed the “Monty.”

Nominated by a faculty member, Robinson-Zañartu’s nomination was forwarded by COE’s Honors and Awards committee to the Faculty Senate. The Senate chose to recommend Robinson-Zañartu for selection, prompting President Hirshman to announce his awarding of the faculty Monty to the active Professor Emerita.

Committee Votes Unanimously to Present Vasquez Urias with Research Citation

The College of Education’s Dr. Marissa Vazquez Urias has been recognized by the Council for the Study of Community Colleges (CSCC) for her outstanding dissertation.

Titled Predictors of sense of belonging among Latino men in community college, Vasquez’s dissertation was selected as the 2015 first runner-up by the Council’s Dissertation of the Year Selection Committee.

Student-run Voice Your Language Forum Emphasizes Bilingual Education

In an event attended by more than 100 people, the student-run Voice Your Language forum brought to light the importance of multilingualism and biliteracy in our schools.

In an event May 1, the student-run organization Voice Your Language was able to gather guests from all over the San Diego are to weigh in on the importance of language in schools as not only a method of communication but also as a way for students and faculty alike to convey their particular culture from one to another.

Autism Study Puts Special Education in Spotlight

One of the largest randomized controlled trial studies in education that has ever been conducted is currently taking place, and members of the COE faculty are at the helm.

The Department of Special Education’s Dr. Laura J. Hall and Dr. Bonnie Kraemer are serving as Site Co-Principal Investigators for a study that evaluates a multi-component educational intervention aimed to prepare students with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) for better post school outcomes. The Department of Education Institute of Education Sciences-awarded project entitled the Center on Secondary Education for Students with Autism is led by University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill researchers Drs. Kara Hume and Sam Odom.  

Imperial County District Elects SDSU Grad as Superintendent

Dr. Todd Finnell, who holds an Educational Leadership Doctorate from the College of Education, was appointed the Imperial County Superintendent of Schools.

Special Education Graduate Receives Marva Collins Diversity Award

Mrs. Wendy Jacob received the Marva Collins Diversity Award from the Division of Learning Disabilities at the annual Council for Exceptional Children conference held in San Diego, April 2015.

The award is given annually to those who have made a significant impact in the education of children and youths with learning disabilities and other special needs who come from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds.  Jacob, an SDSU College of Education graduate, teaches students with mild to moderate disabilities in the San Diego Unified School District.

Art Exhibit Cultivates Creativity and SDSU Connections

In an effort to both cultivate artistic talent and build stronger connections to the University, the College of Education hosted an art competition and exhibition for K-12 students throughout San Diego County.
