Welcome New COE Faculty for Fall 2016

New Faculty
The College of Education is excited to welcome four new faculty members for the fall semester.  This talented group is a wonderful addition to the SDSU community!

Saul I. Maldonado, Ph.D.

Saul I. Maldonado, Ph.D.A former high school teacher and administrator of pre-collegiate programs, Dr. Saúl Isaac Maldonado investigates the intersection of language, disciplinary literacy and K-12 achievement using techniques such as propensity score matching and multi-level modeling on surveys, assessments, and observation protocols. Dr. Maldonado earned his doctorate at UC Santa Cruz in Education.  His evaluation experience includes contributions to programs and initiatives for school districts, county offices of education and federal agencies. Dr. Maldonado currently serves as co-chair of Latina/o Responsive Evaluation Discourse, a topical interest group of the American Evaluation Association.

Jayson W. Richardson, Ph.D.

Dr. Jayson W. Richardson graduated from the University of Minnesota Twin Cities with a Ph.D. in Educational Policy and Administration and a focus in comparative and international development education. He has been a faculty member at the University of North Carolina Wilmington for two years and the University of Kentucky for six years.

At the University of Kentucky, he served as an interim department chair and the Director of Online Teaching and Learning for the College of Education. Dr. Richardson focuses his research and teaching on school technology leadership and international development. He is a Director of the Center for the Advanced Study of Technology Leadership in Education (CASTLE). He continues to work on various technology in education projects as well as human rights projects in less developed countries. His current research projects include: cybercrimes policy in Cambodia; technology savvy district leadership in the United States; open access publishing in the field of educational leadership; and faculty professional development with regards to online teaching.




Christopher Brum, Ph.D.

Dr. Brum began his career as a special education teacher for Boston Public Schools and eventually received his doctorate in Curriculum and Instruction with focus on Special Education from Boston College. His areas of interest include deafblindness, low-incidence disabilities, autism, literacy instruction and communication development. Currently, Dr. Brum is working as a Site Coordinator and Literacy Coach for the Center on Secondary Education for student with Autism Spectrum Disorder (CSESA), as well as researching how literacy can support communication development for individuals with congenital deafblindness. Outside of academia, he enjoys surfing, backpacking, sailing and is also an avid runner.  




Jessica Suhrheinrich , Ph.D.

Department of Special Education

Dr. Jessica Suhrheinrich is a psychologist and services researcher focused on implementation of evidence-based programs for autism spectrum disorders. She completed doctoral and post-doctoral training at UC San Diego and is a research scientist at the Child and Adolescent Services Research Center.

Her clinical experience includes supervising home and school-based programs for children with autism and training teachers to implement behavioral interventions. Prior to attending graduate school in psychology, Dr. Suhrheinrich was also a classroom teacher.  This experience shaped her interest in improving the quality of educational programming for children with autism and increasing teacher access to training in evidence-based interventions.

Dr. Suhrheinrich enjoys reading, gardening and time with her husband and two young daughters.
