Cultural Competency Advances Institutional Effectiveness

Dr. Tanis King Starck, College of Education Assistant Dean of Special Projects, was invited to deliver the Grossmont College Keynote Address at their August 5, 2016 Convocation. Her topic: “How Cultural Competency Advances Institutional Effectiveness.”

Starck, who is also an educational psychologist, speaker, author and specialist on diversity and cultural competency issues, was introduced by Grossmont President Nabil S. Abu-Ghazaleh. Starck’s keynote address stressed the importance for educators and counselors to increase their levels of culturally proficiency in their personal and professional approaches to educating diverse learners. Best practices were presented as to how educators could build their capacity to create climates and cultures where diverse learners will feel accepted, valued and respected which would result in increased levels of retention and engagement rates. Over 250 faculty and staff members attended.

Starck offered an interactive workshop on “Developing your Cultural Competency” where over 50 participants explored Common Beliefs held by educators and discussed practical ways for creating an inclusive environment for all students as a way to increase retention and promote student engagement. During this workshop participants assessed their levels of cultural sensitivity, awareness, and competence.

Starck is an instructor for the Professional Certificate in Cultural Competence program developed by San Diego State University’s College of Education for teachers, school administrators and counselors and presented through the College of Extended Studies.
