COE Alumna is New Principal of Lakeview Elementary

It’s official.

Staci Arnold, a San Diego State University (SDSU) alumna, is the new principal of Lakeview Elementary in Lakeside.

“I am thrilled to be principal at Lakeview,” said Arnold. “I am privileged to call Lakeview my home as I have a strong connection with staff, students and the community.”

Loh-Hagan Receives Award in Reading Education

She has an intense passion for books.

Dr. Virginia Loh-Hagan, a faculty member in the College of Education’s School of Teacher Education, has written academic books. She has written children’s books, presented at local and national book conferences and has served in book award committees.

Her outstanding contributions to the advancement of reading in California, were recently recognized with the California Reading Association's Marcus Foster Memorial Reading Award. The award was established in 1973 to honor the late Dr. Marcus Foster, superintendent of schools in Oakland.

Pang Advocates for Asian Pacific American Achievement

School of Teacher Education faculty member, Dr. Valerie Ooka Pang, is speaking out for better policies and approaches for examining data regarding the very diverse groups of students identified as Asian American and Pacific Islander.  Pang’s research has highlighted the diversity of this very large population of students and challenges us to avoid glossing over important student needs by overgeneralizing characteristics.

Tear Down the Barriers to Bilingual Education

Bilingual education in California suffered a major blow when Proposition 227 passed nearly 20 years ago. Proposition 58 will fix Prop. 227’s mistakes. The measure proposes access and equity to bilingual education programs for all students in California, both those who enter public schools needing to learn English, and English-only speaking students who want to learn a second language.

Convocation Kicks Off New Year

The annual event marks the beginning of the academic year and recognizes faculty Monty winner, Randolph Phillip, Director of SDSU's Center for Research in Mathematics and Science Education (CRMSE), an interdisciplinary community of research scholars from the College of Education and College of Sciences. A testament to his national reputation in the field, he was recently elected president of the Association of Mathematics Teacher Educators.
