COE’s Ewing Wins National Award

The award was established for faculty members who have inspired their former students to make a significant contribution to society.

Dr. Jan Ewing, a faculty member in the College of Education Counseling and School Psychology Department, did exactly that, earning her the Elizabeth Hurlock Beckman Award, national recognition and a $25,000 cash prize. Ewing received her award in mid-November.

Hatch is Counselor Educator of the Year

She did not have a school counselor. That is why Dr. Trish Hatch decided to become one.

Hatch has dedicated her career to advocate for students, to make sure students have well-trained counselors and preparing future counselors who would help students achieve their academic potential.

ARPE Researches Post Deployment Experiences Among Veterans with PTSD

Department of Administration, Rehabilitation, and Postsecondary Education (ARPE) alum Paul Hayes and faculty members Dr. Charles Degeneffe, Dr. Marj Olney, and Dr. Mark Tucker recently published their impactful research in the Rehabilitation Counseling Bulletin, the top journal in rehabilitation counseling.

COE Building Relationships with Taiwan University

The College of Education is building relationships with a Taiwan university that could lead to future partnerships and research exchanges.

Dr. Caren Sax, professor and Chair of the Department of Administration, Rehabilitation, and Postsecondary Education (ARPE) and Director of the Interwork Institute at San Diego State University, Dr. Nan Zhang Hampton, ARPE professor and other SDSU officials recently met with Dr. Chen-Ping Lin from National Kaohsiung Normal University in Taiwan.

Pre-College Institute Gets $3.6 Million

The College of Education’s Pre-College Institute has recently received more than $3.6 million in federal grants to promote access to college and increase graduation rates of underserved students.

The Pre-College Institute will receive a Talent Search Mentoring grant of $240,000 each of the next five years, totaling $1.2 million. It will also get an Educational Talent Search of $487,680 a year through 2021. Both grants total $3,638,400 and are awarded by the U.S. Department of Education through its Higher Education Act of 1965.

COE Graduate Featured in Scholastic Teacher Magazine

We’re talking about Molly Maloy’s classroom in Hill Creek Elementary in Santee, CA.
The colorful and creative design of Maloy’s 4th and 5th grade classroom caught the eye of Scholastic Teacher magazine and got a two-page spread in its back-to-school issue this fall.

COE Student Works to Empower Muslims Locally and Abroad

He’s helped to raise hundreds of thousands of dollars to combat famine in East Africa and build a school in Somalia.

He is the leader of a non-profit organization and is working with San Diego State University to address Muslim student concerns on campus.

He is Mohamed Ahmed, a Somalia refugee who is pursuing his master’s degree in Postsecondary Educational Leadership in SDSU’s College of Education.
