COE Dean Chung Completes First 100-Day Plan

Dean Chung

The dean of the College of Education is done…with his First 100-Day Plan that is.

October 6 marked the first 100 days since Dr. Y. Barry Chung took over as dean of COE at San Diego State University.

Among his top accomplishments, Chung includes:

  • Moving forward with hiring a marketing and communications officer to help promote COE’s programs and services,
  • Offering faculty mentoring grants, and
  • Meeting and learning from many people within the college and across campus.
“I received a very warm welcome from SDSU administrators, faculty, staff and students,” said Chung, adding that he is appreciative of his colleagues’ generosity for taking him out for meals and even giving him some welcome gifts. “Everyone was telling me how nice a community SDSU is, and all the potential we have given the new leaders at all levels.”

Dean Chung has also been busy promoting transparency, consensus building and shared governance.

He indicated that he has established a Dean's Cabinet that serves as an internal advisory group to him.

“The Cabinet has also helped me with making appointments for an external advisory group,” Chung said. “I have been consulting with the department chairs and Dean's Cabinet on new initiatives and have been maintaining timely communications with the college community regarding all new developments.”

In the months to come, Chung said he will focus his energy on making appointments for three leadership positions—senior associate dean, associate dean for research and director of our Joint Doctoral Program. He will also be hiring a marketing and communications officer and planning a Spring 2019 retreat for faculty and staff.

Dean Chung, who was associate dean for graduate studies in the School of Education at Indiana University in Bloomington, added that he will continue to focus on increasing COE’s ranking in California and across the nation. COE is currently ranked the top-ranked education school in San Diego County, No. 7 in California and No. 54 among all universities in the United States.

“Our ranking provides some indication of the academic success and standing of our college, and can be used to recruit faculty, staff and students,” said Chung, adding that he and his partner love San Diego and are looking forward to exploring more of what the region has to offer, but “I think I will miss the snow during Christmas.”
