SDSU Alum and Lecturer Selected as Sweetwater Superintendent

Karen Janney and Sweetwater High School
Following a recent trend of SDSU graduates appointed to local educational leadership positions, the College of Education’s own Dr. Karen Janney has been selected as the Sweetwater Union High School District’s (SUHSD) newest superintendent.

As a graduate of the COE’s Doctor of Education program in PK–12 educational leadership, Dr. Janney has also served as a lecturer in the College and as an executive coach in the National Center for Urban School Transformation. She enters her position as superintendent with an emphasis on district transformation and a background in improving the roles of teachers and administrators alike.

As a former SUHSD principal, Dr. Janney is well-versed on how the largest secondary district in the State of California operates. With approximately 41,000 students in grades 7–12 and over 22,000 adult education students, the southern San Diego district received 19 applications for the superintendent position. After the search was narrowed down to five candidates, Dr. Janney was appointed at the beginning of June.

As the former California Secondary Principal of the Year winner takes on this exciting new challenge, we know to expect great things!  Dr. Janney’s excellent leadership skills and dedication to improving student achievement will serve the district well.  Congratulations, Dr. Janney!
