Students with Disabilities 'Bridge the Gap'
The Department of Administration, Rehabilitation, and Postsecondary Education has adopted a new program that will prepare students with disabilities to join the workforce after they receive a college degree. Titled “Bridging the Gap from College to Careers,” the new curriculum was developed by a UC Berkeley professor and has been turned into a three-unit class at the College of Education.
The San Diego Union-Tribune recently featured the program detailing the different aspects of the curriculum.
Guatemala Excursion Emphasizes the Value of Distance Learning

Ashley Details Her Journey from the Reservation to the Classroom
Receiving an education is one of the most valuable experiences one can achieve in the United States today. But for Alyssa Bahdesbah Ashley, that experience means more than just earning a degree. Ashley, a graduate from the College of Education’s School Psychology department, grew up on a Navajo reservation in Arizona and was able to tell the inspiring story of her upbringing and education through the Pearson Education website. Project SPOKES Works to Identify Needs of Special Educators
Last Spring, the College of Education’s Improving Futures Fund awarded support to Project SPOKES—Sustaining evidence-based Practices of preK-22 Education Specialists—in order to allow new special education teachers to identify their needs.
Uline Recognized for Contributions to Learning Environments Research
Dr. Cynthia Uline, Professor Emeritus in the Educational Leadership department, has been formally recognized by the Association for Learning Environments for outstanding service and contributions to the Advanced Academy for Learning Spaces.

In an effort to make the pursuit of higher education more convenient for those with busy schedules, the Department of Counseling and School Psychology is offering a new online certificate program. The Certificate in Mental Health Recovery and Trauma-informed Care primarily examines practices used to help people with mental illness and common applications of trauma-informed care in education, and community settings.

The National Association for College Admission Counseling (NACAC) rewarded Dr. Trish Hatch with its prestigious Excellence in Achievement award.
Dr. Evans Wins Award from National Council for the Social Studies
The School of Teacher Education’s own Dr. Ron Evans has been selected as a recipient of the 2015 Jean Dresden Grambs Distinguished Career Research in Social Studies Award, a research award given by the National Council for the Social Studies.
$3.5m Grant Aims to Improve Vocational Rehabilitation Services Nationwide

Founded in spring 2015, the Counseling and Social Change Club focuses on creating cultural competency and enforcing ideals based upon helping others in need.

Supported by our community, our players and coaches worked together, they persevered through adversity and their hard work and effort were rewarded. It was great to hear our community’s pride in SDSU’s athletics’ achievements – the women’s soccer team won its fourth consecutive conference title on Sunday – as I traveled throughout the city this weekend.

For example, the development of land grant universities – focused on agriculture and technology – in the 1860s reflected the needs of an emerging industrial society. Similarly, the rise of normal schools – San Diego State’s provenance – reflected our society’s need for broad public education in America’s growing democracy of the 19th century.
