Honors and Achievements: March, 2019

The College of Education is delighted to congratulate the following members of the COE family for their recent achievements:

Alumni 

  • Jerry Buckley (’10 Ed.D., Educational Leadership, concentration in Community College program) was named president of Reedley College. He is the fourth graduate of this program to be named president of a community college.

Faculty 

  • Dr. Douglas Fisher, chair of Educational Leadership, secured a $200,000 grant from The Stuart Foundation.
  • Dr. Fred McFarlane, professor emeritus from Administration, Rehabilitation and Postsecondary Education, is the recipient of the 2019 National Council on Rehabilitation Education (NCRE) Distinguished Career in Rehabilitation Education Award. For Rehabilitation Counseling educators, the Distinguished Career in Rehabilitation Education Award is the highest honor an educator can attain. 
  • Dr. Cynthia Park, faculty member in the School of Teacher Education, secured a $135,000 grant from the University of California at San Diego. 
  • Dr. Caren Sax, chair of Administration, Rehabilitation and Postsecondary Education, secured a $294,998 grant from the California Department of Developmental Services. 

Students 

  • Cynthia Cota (single subject bilingual credential), Jaqueline Garcia Pelayo (multiple subject bilingual online credential) and Karla Ortega (single subject bilingual credential) each received awards from the California Association for Bilingual Education. 
  • Bree Kalima, Kristin Scheiber, Ariana Romero and Jenn Henline (MA students in Postsecondary Educational Leadership) will each be co-presenting with faculty members at this month’s National Association of Student Personnel Administrators (NASPA) conference in Los Angeles. 
  • James Vieira (Induction Program for Education Specialists) was named a 2019 School Site Teacher of the Year by the San Diego Unified School District. He is an education specialist in mild/moderate at San Diego High School, International Studies.
